Research Abstract |
Since water demands have been increasing during the recent decades, stable supply of agricultural water and means of securing water for irrigation are needed in Japan. But, due to environmental problems and escalating construction cost, it is difficult to increase the source reservoir such as dam. To solve these problems, the mid-storage reservoir has been installed in irrigation system between the head works and the dam. The mid-storage reservoir is a king of pond, which is set up for storing the excess water temporarily. Especially, in Japan of recent years, the operation of such a reservoir has been researched for using the excess water generated by rainfall. For instance, if rainfall occurs, the water demand in command area decreases less than the dam release. And such excess water can be stored in the mid-storage reservoir. The water demand increase again in the command area, then the water stored in the mid-storage reservoir, can be used prior to the dam release. In many irrigati

on districts of Japan, the water demand is supplied by tributary inflow as well as dam release. In such cases, the dam release can be saved by the increase of tributary inflow due to rainfall. However, the increased river flow caused by rainfall, which exceeds the water demand of command area and cannot be intaken by irrigation facility, is invalidly discharged downstreams. In this study, we propose the establishment of a mid-storage reservoir that stores the excess water not taken by head works. Also, we propose two operations for effective use of water stored in mid-storage reservoir. One is the individual operation of dam and mid-storage reservoir and the other is the linked. In case of the individual operation of dam and mid-storage reservoir, the operation of dam release become independent of the operation of mid-storage reservoir. In case of the linked, the operation of dam release is controlled with the operation of mid-storage reservoir. And, the effect of the proposed methods are examined by the simulation. Less
