Research Abstract |
We investigated the pathogenicity of EHV-9 in horses. The horse inoculated with EHV-9 showed pyrexia, verifier and viral excretion in nasal discharge without any neurological symptoms. However, nonsuppurative encephalitis was confirmed. These results indicated that EHV-9 using hamsters. We serially passaged EHV-9 in the rabbit kidney cell line, RK-13. After 23 passages, we observed smaller plaques of EHV-9 in MDBK cells. This small plaque forming EHV-9 culture has less pathogencity in hamsters. We cloned the small plaque forming EHV-9. The cloned viruses also showed less pathogencity in hamsters. These results indicated that the plaque sizes in MDBK cells are related to the pathogenicity in hamsters.
