Research Abstract |
The purpose of this fundamental study is to develop a new 3-dimensional (3-D) and practical computation algorithm with less than ±3% accuracy for photon dose calculation, considering heterogeneous corrections in external beam radiotherapy. (1) Research studies of treatment planning devices were done in 1998. Treatment planning devices used in clinical were not satisfied in calculating accuracy. (2) The first and scattered radiation of ^<60>Co gamma rays and 10 MV X-rays were measured. The result indicate that the weighting factor of scattered radiation can be set by the simple method in electron equilibrium areas, but the scattered radiation is not represent by only the first scatter components from non-equilibrium areas. (3) It is the practical method that calculating data of Monte Carlo code are used for the weighting factor of all scattered radiation in the practical 3-D dose calculation in external radiotherapy. (4) By considering the research results, a new practical 3-D computation algorithm and the software are developed from the former one.
