Research Abstract |
There are many neuropsychological studies on the brain electric activity of schizophrenics, unfortunately it still remains elusive results. Then, we examined the feature of the EEG microstates of untreated schizophrenics. They are the minimum electric units of information processing of the brain function. Subjects were 20 untreated schizophrenics and age-and-sex matched normal controls participated in this study. We have recorded EEG from 19 sites on the scalp with closed eyes and visually free from artifacts were chosen to be the representative data of each subject. Methods of analysis in this study were Microstates Modeling and Analysis (EMMA) and Low Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA). EMMA is a method to decide the optimum brain electric potential maps and their number from a series of brain electric activity that relate to the characteristics of mental state. LORETA is a method to localize the electrical sources in the brain electric field. As a result, three model maps (Map1, 2, 3) were extracted from schizophrenics and controls. Contribution and occurrence of Map No2 were clearly different in schizophrenics from in controls. The current density of Map No2 was highly distributed around left superior temporal gyrus with LORETA imaging which indicated abnormal neural circuitry in schizophrenia.
