Research Abstract

Basic approach to the multiple epileptic focal models were studied in cats and in rats. Cortical epileptogenic foci were induced by intracortical microinjections of kainic acid. In Experiment I, cats with a cortical focus, induced seizure did not propagate to the contralateral hemisphere after the callosal section. In animals with multiple cortical foci, after the callosal section, spontaneous seizures originated from each focus but the seizures localized to the ipsilateral hemisphere. In experiment II and III, the mode of seizure propagation was studied using EEG monitorings or autoradiographic study using 14C-deoxyglucose study. In animals without callosal section, three pathways were observed in the mood of seizure propagation ; 1) direct cortico-cortical pathway, 2) cotical focus to basal ganglia and thalamus, and 3) cortico cortical pathway via corpus callosum.
In animals with callosal section, seizures did not become worse. However, autoradiogram demonstrated that seizures independently remained in both hemisphere even after the callosal section.
The present study suggested that callosal section should be indicated after precise analysis of seizure type and seizure propagation in clinical application.
