Research Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the salivary secretion and stomatognatic function in 27 partial denture wearers, aged between 62 and 74. Sixteen of 27 have worn their dentures in good condition (PD group, mean 68.1) showing the mean masticatory ability 87.3 and the high satisfactory index (over 7). 12 volunteers in twenties (Cy group, mean 23.7) and five elders without massing teeth (Co group mean 68.3) participated in this study.
Result as follows ;
1) There was a significant difference in static salivary flow rate between PD group (1.58ml/5min), Co group (0.43 ml/5min ) and Cy group (1.71ml/5min) (p 0.05, t-test). These finding suggested the decrease was due to aging. No significant difference in stimulating salivary flow rate was revealed between PD and Cy groups, otherwise on Co group it was significantly decreased than the groups. Between PD and Co groups, any difference was not showed in the masticatory ability by Kyushu Univ,s method using ATP capsule, respectively, 1.67J and 1.70J. These findings suggested that the subjects of PD achieved sufficiently masticatory function and salivary secretion by wearing dentures.
2) No relation showed between xerostomia and salivary secretion on Co group. On PD group, the stimulating salivary flow rate in the subjects with xerostomia was significantly more than that without xerostomia. The results of questionnaire as to their consciousness, such as xerostomia, of salivary secretion in PD group were consistent with the physiological results.
3) On the PD group, the subjects who the stimulating salivary flow rate was 6.0ml/5min revealed higher tasty perception, compared with the subjects that of 2.5ml/5min. The tasty perception in Co group showed a higher sensitivity than in PD group in spite of decreased salivary secretion.
4) 5 cases in PD group was done 2 years- follow up, the stimulating salivary flow rate was increased gradually following with improving masticatory ability.
