Research Abstract

The purpose in this study was to establish a method of evaluating dentures by using biomedical information and to investigate soinatopsychic significance of dentures.
The subjects were five patients (58.6 ± 2.41 years of age) with no major systemic diseases and who were not receiving medication for cardiovascular system among patients who consulted our department to obtain new dentures. We evaluated the degree of subjective satisfaction during the placement of new dentures and previous dentures (questionnaires regarding denture function using VAS), autonomic nervous complaints, and autonomic functional examinations. We applied simple and non-invasive cardiovascular physiological examinations, such as electrocardiogiaphy and variation of blood pressure, to the autonomic functional examinations to obtain biomedical information. In the experiments, we evaluated the coefficient of variation of R-R intervals on the electrocardiograms , heart rate, systolic pressure, and diastolic pressure du … More ring the mastication of a piece of rubber with the new dentures and previous dentures, as the parameters of sympathetic and parasympathetic activities.
The results were as follows :
1. Degree of satisfaction significantly improved by placing new dentures, showing a significant decrease in the autonomic nervous complaints.
2. An increase in the heart rate, an increase in the coefficient of variation of R R intervals, and the rise of blood pressure were observed during masticating a price of rubber with new and previous dentures, showing sympathetic functional hyperergasia.
3. The influence of sympathetic functional hypeiergasia during masticating a piece of rubber more markedly appeared with the placement of previous dentures than with the placement of new dentures, and the influence continued for a longer period after finishing masticating with the placement of previous dentures than with the placement of new dentures.
The autonomic functional examination by examining blood circulatory kinetics is widely used because it is non-invasive, simple, and highly reproducible, and this study suggested the possibility of a comprehensive evaluation of placed dentures, and confirmed the influence of dentures on autonomic functions. We would like to confirm the influence on the autonomic functions for a longer period with increased number of the subjects and range of age distribution. Less
