Research Abstract |
Recently, in the education of clinical dentistry, integrated and interdisciplinary subjects and concepts of comprehensive oral health. care, problem-oriented and problem-solving systems are required. Moreover, significance of patient-dentist relationship, such as an informed consent, is also regarded as important element on practicing dentistry. Therefore, for the proper clinical dentistry, not only up-to-minute dental sciences but also new approach with behavioral sciences is needed. The purpose of this research project is to attempt to integrate systematically comprehensive dentistry and behavioral dentistry into undergraduate dental education. In 2000, as a part of the research project, exercise of attending on new outpatients of university dental hospital was carried out to 3rd, 4th and 5th grade dental students. This exercise is aiming at observing dentists' attitude to their patients and at recognizing viewpoints of patient but dental student, a dentist in the making. Consequently students evaluated themselves and then found out the object of self-study. Therefore, the exercise of attending on patients make students more motivated to study than before. In addition, several useful informations were obtained through a questionnaire. These results show that this exercise is effective for developing affective domain in taxonomy of educational objectives.
