Research Abstract |
Facial morphology was assessed in 60 patients with unilateral cleft lip (13 patients with cleft lip, 20 patients with cleft lip and alveolus and 27 patients with cleft lip and palate) who had undergone lip repair by the same surgeon and surgical procedure. The patients were assessed just prior to surgery and 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 1 year postoperatively with the use of non-contact, high-speed three-dimensional facial measuring apparatus (Voxelan) from 1998 to 1999 in Kagoshima University Dental School Hospital. Analysis of nasolabial configuration before surgery and the postoperative course was revealed: 1. Prior to surgery, the degree of lateral deviation of nasolabial configuration was most noticeable in cleft lip and palate patient's group and the degree of superior-inferior deviation was most in cleft lip and alveolus patient's group. The degree of anterior-posterior deviation in cleft and palate patient's group was approximately equal to that in cleft lip and alveolus patient's group. The degree of three-dimensional deviation of nasolabial configuration in cleft lip patient's group was most slightly. 2. The morphological changes of the nasolabial form were analyzed after surgery. The nasolabial form in the patients of severer nasolabial configuration before operation was tended to deform after surgery in each cleft type. 3. As a consequence, it was suggested that management before and after surgery and surgical procedure should be improved more and more.
