Research Abstract

First mathematical model of human masticatory vertical jaw movement has been developed. In order to do this. we used jerk-cost function as an objective cost-function and assumed that the mandibular movement during chewing is controlled so as to maximize the smoothness. The results of simulation showed that both peak velocity and jerk-cost were well predicted by the model. In addition, the model could predict time-varying 3D total movement pathway length. Based on these findings, it is suggested that human masticatory movement is optimally controlled to be as smooth as possible. Also, in the process of current study, it is founded that the boundary condition in terms of movement acceleration at the end of jaw opening correlated with visco-elasticity of surrounding soft tissues, and in gumchewing, jaw closing movement is smoother than opening movement. By contrast, the movement acceleration is rapidly changed during jelly-chewing in which the hard food particle must be broken. As a result, the jerk-cost considerably increased.
