Research Abstract |
Age-related changes on physiological and histochemical properties in the skeletal muscle were studied in 20-, 40-, 50-, and 60-week-old senescence accelerated P6 mice (SAMP6). The voluntary running was carried out, before the atrophy was generated, and the effect of the running exercise on the skeletal muscle was examined. Though contraction time and 1/2relaxation time did not changes with aging, the tetanic tension decreased from 40- over 50-week-old. In the similar period, cross-sectional area of muscle fiber decreased, and the atrophy of this muscle fiber seemed to have caused the decrease of the tension. Fatigue resistance and oxidative enzyme activity (Succinate dehydrogenase) did not changes with aging. These results suggested that there was the relation between physiological and histochemical properties in the aging alternation of skeletal muscle of the SAM. This research proved that the atrophy starts in the skeletal muscle of the SAM was after 40 weeks-old. Then, the voluntary running was carried out from 40 weeks-old. The running distance per a day decreased from 50 weeks-old with the aging. Relative muscle weight of the exercised group showed high value from the control group at 70 weeks-old. These results indicated the possibility in which the voluntary running suppressed the atrophy of the muscle. The SAM seemed to sufficiently deserve the model which observed the aging phenomenon of skeletal muscle further than this study result without contradicting the precedence researches. It is necessary to examine the depression effect of muscle atrophy by various exercise conditions in future too.
