Research Abstract |
"Development of English Composition Materials in a CALL System by Random Word Arrangement" (Volume 1, Fundamental English ; Volume 2, English for General Science), a two-year project, was carried out in 1998 and 1999. English composition materials were developed on the basis of a 'word-adding' method in order to facilitate improved student understanding of English word structures. To prevent students memorizing the answer choices by number, the system changes the arrangement of words at random each time an exercise is displayed. In order to investigate the effectiveness of the composition materials, two of the exercises were tested on a class of approximately 30 college students. The class testing was carried out twice, at an interval of one month. In the first test, composition problems of the ordinary type (with a Japanese Student and alphabetically arranged English words as hints) were used. For the second test, the same two problems were used, but presented differently, by displaying the Japanese words in English word order. Scores were higher on the second version. It is considered that this word-order model - showing the English syntax using Japanese vocabulary - may help to improve student understanding in English composition. I plan to continue to adapt this method to CALL material in the future.
