| Research Abstract |
平成11年度においては、現代ヒンドゥー教の発展と変容における聖者の役割について、歴史人類学的な観点から、オリッサにおける事例を中心に研究を進めた。現代インドにおいては、ヒンドゥー至上主義の台頭が憂慮されているが、その議論においては世俗主義かヒンドゥー至上主義かどちらかの選択肢しかないような貧しい二分法による水掛け論が多い。私はこうした水掛け論をこえて、インド社会における「普遍的価値」の可能性を再考するために、18世紀の近世から植民地的近代そしてポスト植民地的近代の今日にまでいたる、インド社会における普遍的価値と聖性のつながりについて実証的な研究を進めた。
