| Research Abstract |
本研究は、2000年中には4章からなる博士論文に発展させることを目指しており、すでにその内2章までは仕上げ、3章を現在執筆中である。第1章ではSchreinerの初期の2作品"My First Adventure at the Cape"とUndineを扱い、植民地生まれの女性の隷属的な精神状態と南アフリカ人としての意識の芽生えとの葛藤について、その土地の表象を通して考察した。第2章ではSchreinerの代表作てあるThe Story of an African Farmを取り上げ、アフリカの農場の持つ政治性について、2人の主人公の成長と関連させて論じた。第3章では極めて政治色の濃い2作品Trooper Peter Halket of Mashonalandと"Eighteen Ninety-Nine"を扱い、被植民者側に立った反帝国主義色の強い土地の表象にあらわれるイギリス中心主義の矛盾について執筆中である。第1章の一部を「Olive Schreiner の"MyFirst Adventure at the Cape"(1882)とUndine(1929)考察一植民地生まれの白人女性がアフリカに「故郷」を抱くまで一」として平成11年5月の日本英文学会において口頭発表し、その後、それをさらに発展させたものを平成12年3月に"The Colonizer,the Colonized,and the Colonist:A Study of Olive Schreiner's"My First Adventure at the Cape"and Undine"として東京女子大学英米文学評論に発表した。また、1章の部分の背景として19世紀後半の探検家についての研究も行った関係で、その関連分野においても新書館発行の「世界の旅行記101」に執筆した。
