Research Abstract |
I.Study of rehabilitation needs in terminal cancer patients. Fifty eight patients, who were in severe deconditioning state due to teraminal cancer, were reviewed. We evaluated their medical problems, stage of diseases, risk factors for daily activities, impairments, disabilities, handicaps, and subjective aspect as to hope for the end of their life. Older patients (over 65 years old age) tended to have more needs about their family life , and younger patients (less than 65 years old age) to have needs about social life, vocational activities and leisure activities. Rate of return to home was slightly higher in younger patients than older patients. II . Study in disability oriented rehabilitation program and pain management. We developed a pain rating scale in daily activities and ADL scales, and studied outcome of our disability oriented programme. After two weeks from initiation of programme, pain was reduced markedly, and independence of ADL improved, especially in mobility as walking activities, and sitting up from lying position. III.Study in comprehensive evaluation methods and program revision for terminal cancer patients We found excellent inter-rater reliability of a Comprehensive QOL assessment method developed by Okawa and Ueda in terminal cancer patients. We developed the questionnaire forms of a pain rating scale in daily activities and ADL scale, and proposed a rehabilitation program for terminal cancer patients in sever deconditioning states.
