Research Abstract

磁気冷凍システムでは、磁場が大きいほど大きな温度変化を得ることができる。2Tより大きな磁場を印加する場合には、一般的に超伝導電磁石が必要になり、そのため液体ヘリウムを必要する。磁気冷凍システムに使用する磁性体は、低磁場で大きな磁気熱量効果を示すことに加えて、温度ヒステリシス及び磁場ヒステリシスが小さいことが望ましい。
三元金属間化合物ErCr2Si2及びErMn2Si2が、低磁場において温度ヒステリシス及び磁場ヒステリシス無しに大きな磁気エントロピー変化を示すことを見いだし、本物質を磁気冷凍システムの磁性材料として利用することを考えついた。これらの磁気熱量材料は、2T程度の小さな磁場でも大きな磁気熱量効果を持つため、超伝導電磁石を用いずに十分な磁気冷凍効果を発揮することが出来る。すなわち、磁性材料にErCr2Si2及びErMn2Si2を利用した磁気冷凍装置を、クライオクーラーと組み合わせることにより、ヘリウム使用量を極低減化し、1~5Kという極低温を生成することができる。しかし、磁気熱量材料ErCr2Si2とErMn2Si2の冷凍性能を十分引き出すためには、装置の性能を充分に引き出すためのデザイン設計が必要であり、特に磁気熱量材料の形状と熱伝導の関連を実験的に計測することにより、最適な設計パラメータを見出す実験を実施した。
