Research Abstract

アトラス実験のミューオン飛跡検出器は、超電導空芯トロイド電磁石中に置かれた約40万本のドリフトチューブよりなり、陽子・陽子衝突反応で生成されるミューオンの運動量と位置を単独で精密に測定することが出来る。この検出器の性能を充分に引きだす為には、300psという高時間分解能を持った時間測定集積回路(TDC : Time to Digital Converter)が必要とされる。本研究では、このTDCチップを最先端ゲートアレイプロセス(CMOS 0.3um)を使用して開発した。
このチップは、約120万個のトランジスターを含み、ひとつのチップに24チャンネルの入力を持ち、不感時間なしに入力パルスの立ち上がり・立ち下がり時間を測定することが出来る。
開発したLSIはAMT(ATLAS Muon TDC)-3と命名され、2003年夏のCERN研究所のテストビームを使用した実験において、機能に問題がないことが確認され、その後約2万個の量産を無事終えた。このLSIは、イスラエルワイツマン研究所の監督の下にイスラエル企業に置いてプリント基板に実装され、ハーバード大学に於いて全数の試験が行われた。その後、アトラスミューオングループの各研究所、大学に送られミューオン検出器に実装されている。
また、量産したLSIの放射線耐性を調べるため、東京都立大学でCo60ガンマ線照射が、東北大学サイクロトロンRIセンターで陽子照射実験が行われ、LHC実験での使用に問題がない事が確認された。
