Research Abstract |
The purposes of this project were to do fundamental researches for supporting the development of (A) new coal pretreatment methods, (B) in situ de-Nox/de-Sox methods, and c enhanced flue gas treatment methods. The developed technologies are for the utilization of low rank coals in power generation in the near future. The project was revised and/or modified through the internal assessment and evaluation by the steering committee. Main results obtained are (A) the developments of new coal pretreatment methods utilizing solvents, various forms of CaO particles, (B) the proposal of a new fluidized bed coal combustion concept and the development of de-Nox/de-Sox methods utilizing a macro porous CaO, and c de-Nox/de-Sox methods at room temperature utilizing an activated carbon fiber and the development of several new types of de-Nox/de-Sox sorbents. Furthermore, several methods were proposed for the measurement and removal of trace elements such as Hg and As. These outcomes will be surely utilized in the coal utilization technologies in the near future. Endeavor was also made to make public the outcome of this project. The final report was prepared in English, and all the presentations at the review meeting were also made in English. Four distinct researchers from abroad made plenary lectures at the review meeting and a panel discussion was made on the future development of clean coal technology and international cooperation. In March of this year a symposium called "Clean Coal Technology" was organized by the head investigator at 225^<th> national meeting of the American Chemistry to advertise the results of this project. Furthermore, the publication of a special issue of one of internationally prestigious journals, FUEL, is now in progress to make public the outcome of the symposium. These activities will help the outcome of this project to be utilized world wide.
