Research Abstract |
The purpose of this project is to re-examine classical theories and traditional concepts in sociology through formalization, and to explore the possibility of breakthrough in modern sociological theories. For a main purpose, we re-examined main classical sociological theories systematically and we could get some important theoretical findings on the following topics : the diffusion process of capitalistic ethos (Weber), the concept of property right (Marx), the mechanism through which division of labor results in solidarity (Durkheim), the stability of complementary interaction (Parsons), and so on. The findings have been derived, not only through formalization, but also through drastic simplification and crossbreeding. We cannot judge, at present, whether or not our exceptional (even in the world) but 'inconstant' output could open the possibility of breakthrough in modern sociological theories. However, it is necessary in sociology to replace the genealogical history of viewpoints (or schemes) with the history of theoretical developments. Other works on formalization of traditional concepts, as well as of data analysis, exemplify advanced trials as such. Here we worked on the following topics : the relationship between cognitive process and reference groups as well as social expectations, social order and social change through social choice theory and game theory, the secondary formal analysis of data and cases in the past. It is also our further task to investigate the relationship between theories in a unified way.
