Research Abstract |
A combination of repeated rolling and nitriding process using foil metallurgy can fabricate metal/nitrides super-laminates with nano-scale layer spacing. At first Ag/Fe super-laminates were made by repeat process of diffusion bonding and rolling using a starting material consisting of hundreds of silver and iron foils stacked mutually. The structure of the Ag/Fe super-laminates were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and mossbauer spectroscopy. The layer structure was maintained after repeated rolling and both silver atoms and iron atoms near the interface between Ag and Fe layers did not make the formation of solid solution mutually. The crystal orientation of Ag layers was influenced by the rolling texture formation of Fe layers. By nitriding the Ag/Fe super-laminates, Ag/Fe-nitrides super-laminates can be successfully synthesized. The nitrided laminates were characterized by SEM, EDS and X-ray diffraction for the microstructure and the identification of nitrides.
