Research Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify effective nursing interventions to make a mutual agreement with patient's family, develop manual of nursing interventions for a mutual agreement and examine the utilities of the manual. The manual was developed based on following steps ; 1) data was corrected from role playing by researchers and interview with expert nurses, 2) data was analyzed and abstracted to universal interventions and make out "Manual of Nursing Interventions for Mutual Agreement in the Family", 3) 20 expert nurses were interviewed using focus-group methodology, and the nurses were requested to apply the manual in clinical practice and evaluate the usability.
As the results, nursing interventions to make a mutual agreement in the family consists of 3 layers ; [Fundamental Elements], [Core Interventions] and [Supplementary Interventions]. [Fundamental Elements] contain three aspects, that are the assessment of family's situation, the nurses' attitude to stand neutral, and t … More he nurses' attitude to carry out decision making process step by step. [Core interventions] contain 2 nursing interventions and nurses used these interventions invariably ; <Support the family to make a decision>, <Maintain the family's Power >. Nurses used <Support the family to make a decision>, because they recognized that a mutual agreement was a process of decision making by the family. At the same time, nurses used <Maintain the Family's Power>, because they knew that the family needed the power to overcome problematic situation which resulted from illness of the family member. [Supplementary Interventions] contain 4 nursing interventions and nurses used these interventions according to the situation in families ; <Help the family to face reality><Facilitate the family interaction><Operate the power structure in the family><Operate the emotion in the family>. The nurses used almost all interventions of the manual in clinical practice. Most of them answered the manual had been useful both in clinical use and staff development.
The conclusions were : 1) nursing interventions abstracted in this study had validity, and 2) these interventions were effective in making a mutual agreement in the family. Less
