Research Abstract |
The study makes observation on oil painting works in the latter period of Meiji era from preserved works of The University Art Museum Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music including the works by teachers of Western Painting Course, Tokyo Bijutsu gakko to research the aged deterioration, preservation and restoration condition, and to reveal the oil painting techniques and materials of Seiki Kuroda's group called"Gaiko-ha"as well as the idea and practical entire view of Tokyo Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko from the viewpoints of painting techniques and materials in addition to painting preservation and restoration skills. Observation of the works are carried out by general surveying the actual works, visible light photos (normal photo, side-light photo, and microscope photo), ultraviolet fluorescent photo, infrared-ray photo, and X-ray photo. Adding the study result leads a completed research from the first period to the latter period of Meiji era. As a result, the following facts were revealed. Through the analysis, etc. of the works, disadvantageous points of zinc white including cracks and removal of upper-layer pigments are pointed out, but some works has the base layer of zinc white as the main component, and the adhesion with the pigment layer was favorable. Accordingly, a new study theme to research the reason was recognized. Also, ultraviolet fluorescent photo revealed the combination use of lead white and zinc white and that it is effective to judge the used areas. Through the entire research, it was revealed that painting techniques and materials were lightly considered after the latter period of Meiji era in order to lay stress on "Expression" in comparison with the first period of Meiji era when the introduction of formal oil painting technique was considered important. In addition, the investigation to oil painting materials and techniques had not been actively carried out because of being engaged in the transfer of new art movement of Europe.
