Research Abstract |
In this research, we developped a new experimental system of optical recognition of scientific documents including mathematical expressions. The system recognizes scanned images of clearly printed mathematical documents and outputs the recognition results in various formats : LaTeX, MathML, and especially in Braille codes, in UBC (Unified Braille Code)for English texts and in Japanese Braille Codes for Japanese texts. As for the mathematical expressions, the system recognizes almost all expressions used at the first courses of university mathematics level. The system has two modes of user interfaces : afully automatic mode for blind users and an interactive mode. The latter mode provides a very easy handwriting interface to correct the recognition results of mathematical expressions. We have made XML documents integrated printed characters and braille codes. The integrated documents have informations of printed characters, and the sighted people can also use them. This has an important meaning that the flies can be used the electronic liblary. In 1955, International Council on english Braille (ICEB) released Unified Braille Code (UBC) to unify the Braille in English-spoken world. We aproved UBC to Japanese version UJBC. In order to develop the UJBC, braille symbols were assigned to English and Japanese graphic character codes with Unicode.
