Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which Vasubandhu's Abhidharmakosabhasya relied on the Yogacarabhumi by comparing the two texts. However, since the Abhidharmakosabhasya is a long and difficult text, I used the Nyayanusara, a text by Samghabhadra critical of the Abhidharmakosabhasya, in the following way to further my research. When Samghabhadra, in the Nyayanusara, criticizes Vasubandhu from departing from the orthodox Sarvastivadin position, he calls Vasubandhu "sutra-master." Therefore, I first searched the Nyayanusara by computer for all occurrences of the term "sutra-master." Then I located the passages in the Abhidharmakosabhasya that Samghabhadra was criticizing. Next, I tried to understand the bases for Samghabhadra's criticisms. Finally, I searched the Yogacarabhumi by computer in order to locate corresponding passages. All together, I examined the first three chapters of the Abhidharmakosabhasya. Then I inputted the Sanskrit text of the relevant passages from the Abhidharmakosabhasya together with the Chinese text of the corresponding passages in the Yogacarabhumi. I wrote an introduction to the report, in which I analyzed the results, and finally I put together the complete report for publication.
