Research Abstract |
In the first year, the research team conducted : 1) the analysis of the change of class size after the second world war, 2) the preliminary survey of educational effects of class size. In the second year, after questionnaire items were examined to be finalized, the questionnaires were administered to the elementary and lower secondary teachers as well as school children (grade 4 to 6 in elementary schools, grade 7yo 9 in lower secondary schools). The purpose of the questionnaires was to examine the differentiated effects on education due to class sizes and introduction of team-teaching. The questionnaires were sent out to 3,500 teachers and 7,500 students in 40 elementary schools and 29 lower secondary schools in seven (7) prefectures nationwide. 1,322 teachers and 7,431 students returned the questionnaire. In addition to the analysis of the answers to the questionnaire, the research team included some other research results of class size and the translation of an US project to reduce class size in our report.
