Research Abstract |
This research made an analysis of the Census Registers from Kyongsan-do Changnyong-province (慶尚道昌寧県) in the 19th century, using 14 volumes now possessed by Gakushuin University. Uneven though these records are year by year and also by areas, the 14 books are undoubtedly the first class materials of Changnyong-province in the 19th century. Elementary analysis showed that there is a noticeable discrepancy between the total number (toisang 都巳上) and the number of enters, especially with the population of youth. This seems to indicate a degree of fluidization that happened in the population of Changnyong-province in the 19th century. The household-head's wives were classified into three groups (si氏, song姓, sosa召史) by their social status, The number of those of the highest class (si氏) steadily increased in the center of province (邑内), though the rate of the increase was lower than the villages (外村). As. the case study, this research analyzed the personnel of schools (郷枝, 書院), and some hyangni (郷吏) with their relatives in the Census Registers.
