Research Abstract |
The research has compiled a database comprising all the entries of the Japano-Portugtuese and Sino-Japanese dictionaries published by the Jesuit Mission Press in the late 16th centuries. The databse makes part of the corpus of databased on the Christian documents, which has been maintained by the head investigator these 15 years. Based on this corpus of the Christian document database, the vocabularie of the Christian documents, among which are latinised Japanese versions such as, SANCTOS NO GOSAGUEO, FIDES NO DOXI, SPIRITUAL XUGUIO, as well as KANJI-based documents such as, GUIA DO PECADOR, ORATIO NO FONYACU, has been compared with that of the dictionaries. It has been noted based on the Christian document database (without the dictionaries) that the discrepancy between latinised Japanese and KANJI-based Japanese : this tendency has been certified even between the dictionary of the (latinised) Japano-Portuguese version and the Sino-Japanese dictionary, both published by the Jesuit Mission Press. The term report document lists all the entries of the Sino-Japanese dictionary 'RAKUYOXU' with together with the sources from a KANJI-based document 'GUIA DO PECADOR', where only 1,543 words are sited 27,843 times, leaving behind the Buddhist terms in the Sino-Japanese dictionary, apparently avoided utilising in the real Mission documents such as 'GUIA DO PECADOR'.
