Research Abstract

The upper Pleistocene formation in the Osaka Plain consists of Ma12 bed and the overlying gravel and sand layers called as "Tenma Formation". While there can be no doubt that Ma12 bed is the marine clay bed deposited in the last inter-glacial period, there must be considerable doubt as the stratigraphical correlation on the Tenma Formation. In this study, the Taisho drilling core through these layers was sampled at Taisho High School located in the coastal area of the west part in the Osaka Plain. The Tsumori drilling core which had been sampled by the Osaka City Office, was used for the comparison with the Taisho core. The analysis on lithology and volcanic glass in the sediments was carried out with these core samples.
From the lithology and distribution of these core samples, the Tenma Formation is divided into the gravels and alternations. The alternations consisting of gravel, sand, silt and peat, conformably overlie the Ma12 bed and forms the buried terrace. The gravels consisting of pebble to cobble gravel with coarse sand matrix fill up the buried valley where the buried terrace was eroded.
As the result of the volcanic glass analysis, the gravels filling up the buried valley deposited in the late glacial substage. Therefore, these gravels are correlated with the basal gravel of the Namba Formation. And also, This basal gravel of the Namba Formation is correlated with the Nanagochi Formation in the Kanto Plain, and the First Gravels and the Nobi Formation in the Nobi Plain.
