Research Abstract

The objectives of this research is to develop and establish a rigorous material constitutive model that accurately predicts the macro-behavior of an intelligent composite material. The intelligent material has a number of micro-actuators that are dispersed or regularly arrayed in the medium of the matrix m material. By properly arranging the micro-actuators in distribution, direction, and/or volume fraction, a precise and designated function can be performed. In the present development a phase transforming alloy is considered for taking the role of the actuator so that the intelligent material may have a high degree of mechanical function. For this end, the only amenable model is selected from our previous developments, that is a self-consistent type constitutive model, SCC-LRM. The model describes with a good accuracy the macroscopic behavior of the composite that contains particle inclusions of various types of grains.
In the present model, piezo elastic materials or phase transformat … More ion materials are considered to take the role of the micro-actuator. Although the degree of freedom of deformation behavior is low when those materials were used as monolith material, it is possible to give a high performance that the degree of freedom is high by choosing some microscopic particle shape such as fiber. However, the behavior of the macro-material of such intelligence material is very complicated and is not established yet For a practical use of the intelligent material, a link between the meso-material design and the macro-function is essential. In this study, the objective is set to establish a constitutive law for such intelligence m material. For the objective of this research, the self-consistent type SCC-LRM model, which has been developed by our group, was used. Especially in which, two effects, namely the meso-inhombgeneity and non linearity caused by interference between adjacent particles, are accounted for. It can be said that the emergence of the SCC-LRM model has an important meaning, since the conventional mean field theory has been used in the wide area of composite material technology. In the meantime, authors developed Localized Rigidity Model (LRM) in which stress and strain were distributed in the phase. And it was verified with the result of analysis that the accuracy is very high in the whole range of volume fraction. Thus, it is advocated that the development of a constitutive law with the meaningful performance in this study is impossible without the employment of the LRM which considered the distribution of stress and strain for the nonlinearproblem of composite material.
