Research Abstract |
A stiffening method for existing cylindrical steel piers is studied. In order to strengthen existing pier, fuse structure is used. The study is carried out by experimental and numerical analytical method. In order to raise the ductility of piers, we need following point. 1. The horizontal strength of the pier must not be raised over 10% by the work. 2. Ductility of the pier needs to increase. The stiffening method is carried out as following. 1. When big horizontal load act on the non-pier, local buckling occurs on the pier. The stiffening work is given around the buckling part. Rectangular steel plates are welded on it. 2. In order to prevent to raise the horizontal strength of the pier, a gap is set at the buckling part. The rectangular plates are not welded at the buckling part. We call the gap as fuse structure. We can get the results that the horizontal strength raise below approximately 10% and the ductility raise as approximately 20% by the fuse structure.
