Research Abstract

It is one of the problems at the site of historic remains' restoration in the subtropical zone that the vegetation grows thickly within short term, and then the vagetative maintenance is one on the most important theme.
The investigations of the vegetation control were carried out at the site of historic castle remains at Furusutobaru in Ishigaki Island.
One of the investigations was about the forest maintenance, in which short sized trees were cut down and the forest was made open with some large sized trees remained. An adequate density of trees were considered as 600 trees/ha. At that time the mainenace of the undergrowths, especially clearing away of them should be carried out.
Another of the investigations was the vegetative growth control of the ground surface at the site of ruins. The test of the vegetative growth control was conducted on the ground surface after clear cutting of the forest.
The test fields were constructed as follows ; 1) control by planting grass, 2) control by paving coral, and 3) bare soil surface.
1,000g/m^2 to 2,0O0g/m^2 of the vegetative growth was measured in 5 months to one year at the tested fields. Fine grass growth was able to control the thickly vegetative growth and the paving coral should be tested more.
