Research Abstract |
1. This paper reports the number and the location of lost villages in Japan by referring to the editions of maps in some stages. It proved to be that about 3125 of villages were lost in these areas after World War II. It is guessed that in the period of 1945-1965, 1407 villages , 1965-1985, 1515 villages, and 1985 to the present time, 203 villages were lost. 2. About the lost villages from 1985 to the present time, Close observation of the maps shows that 157 (77.3%) of the defunct villages are lost for the reasons of "their general factors", while 46 (22.7%) are lost because of "their particular factors". The particular factors consist of village transfer caused by submergences in dam constructions, village evacuation affected by the locations of other public facilities, and so on. 3. Investigating about the frequency of lost villages occurred in a year, in 1985 to the present time there are as many as one third of lost villages that of in 1945-1985.
