Research Abstract |
The classification of the genus Simulium s.l. of the Oriental and Australasian Regions was reassessed by molecular phylogenic analysis of the nucleotide sequences of a subregion of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene, as well as examinations of morphological characters, in particular, genitalia of both sexes of adults of species belonging to six subgenera. Our data show that 1) two of six species groups of the subgenus Morops, i.e., banauense from Philippines and sherwoodi from South Pacific, should be transferred to the related subgenus Gomphostilbia ; 2) S.konoi, an ungrouped Japanese species, as well as ruficorne species group of the subgenus Nevermannia should be removed from this subgenus ; 3) Daviesellum, a newly established subgenus, is very far from all the other subgenera ; 4) all the 12 species groups of the subgenus Simulium s.str. have been well defined ; 5) the subgenus Wallacellum, morphologically similar to Morops, is well separated from Morops.
