Research Abstract |
The validity and reliability of the newly developed questionnaire on dysphagia screening test was studied for community-residing elderly in Akita prefecture, Japan. In addition to the dysphagia questionnaire, the questionnaire to determine the biosocial rhythms of daily living and the instrumental activity of daily living were also used. Among 2111 elderly, complete answers were obtained from 1390 elderly persons. The reliabily coefficient of alpha was 0.8473. Among 15 items of Fujishima's original questionnaire, 14 items were considered to be useful for community screening. The factor analysis revealed that the items were composed of five factors whose factor contribution was 59%. The prevalence of dysphagia in community-residing elderly persons aged 65 years and over was 18.8%. This new questionnaire seemed to be useful for screening and prevention of dysphagia in community-residing elderly persons. With this questionnaire, comprehensive health education program on food and healthy life was effective for health communication in a small community. The participatory health promotion program including group discussion by community residents was useful for the empowerment of the community elderly persons.
