Research Abstract |
Previously, we have reported that transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) production in colon mucosa is lower in the distal colon and that development of sporadic adenomas is associated with lower levels of TGF-β1. In recent studies, we investigated the prevalence of the methylation in the promoter of TGF-β1 gene by using methylation specific PCR.These have shown that prevalence of the methylation in the promoter of TGF-β1 gene gradually increased from ascending colon to the rectum. When the prevalence of the methylation in the promoter of TGF-β1 gene was compared between normal and cancer-bearing colon mucosa, the prevalence was higher in the latter. These results suggests that the methylation in the promoter of TGF-β1 gene is closely associated with site-dependent production of TGF-β1 in colon mucosa and may be related to the development of colon cancer.
