We studied the relationship between sleep disorders and the circadian rhythm of melatonin (MLT) in 18 children with developmental disorders (Autism 3, ADHD 3, and Rett syndrome 12). All patient had delayed sleep time and short sleep time except one patient who had non-24 sleep awake cycle. The mean level of urinary sulphatoxymelatonin (sMLT) at early morning in normal controls is 130 ng/mg.cre(minimum-maximum; 33-409) in A group (9 children aged 2-4 years), 97 ng/mg.cre(13-326) in B group (10 children aged 5-9 years), and 31 ng/mg.cre (3-63) in C groups (10 children, aged 10-14 years). The mean level of sMLT at evening is 13 ng/mg. cre(4-40) in A group, 3 ng/mg.cre(2-20) in B group, and 4 ng/mg.cre(0.1-10) in C group. We examined urinary sMLT during 24 hours in 5 children (Autism 1, ADHD 1, and Rett syndrome 3). The elevation of sMLT during sleep time was seen in these 5 children. It may suggest that MLT induces sleep. In the other hand, 2 points of examination, morning and evening, revealed normal pattern in 9 patients out of 13 patients. These results showed that 2 point examination is not enough to reveal the relationship sleep disorders and developmental disorders. Further examinations need to define the relationship sleep disturbance and melatonin secretion in autism, ADHD, and Rett syndrome.
