Research Abstract

The prognosis hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been improved after hepatic resection. This study was undertaken to determine independent risk factors affecting the length of disease-free survival. Activity of hepatitis was graded by the histological activity index (HAI) score, which was proposed by Knodell et al. Proportional hazard analysis demonstrated thefollowing results. The independent factors for long-term survival without recurrence were the patients' age, indocyanine green retention rate, number of tumor nodules, microscopic tumor capsular invasion and portal infiltration, and inflammatory activity assessed by HAI score. The importance of inflammatory activity in addition to aging, hepatic reserve and tumorcharacteristics was confirmed as a risk factor for recurrence by multivariate analysis. To achieve longer disease-free survival, not only early detection but also suppression of co-existing hepatitis is prerequisite.
