Research Abstract |
We studied effects of prolongation of consonant by digital processing on speech discrimination scores. Consonant discriminations with /m/, /n/, /r/, /t/, /s/ were improved in patients with sensorineural hearing loss, when the processing was applied on Japanese monosyllables, whereas, consonant discriminations with /t/, /k/, /h/ were decreased. In other study using nonsense word list, the effects of the digital processing on consonants of /g/, /z/, /j/, /s/, /d/, /w/, /f/, /b/, /tz/, /k/, /h/, /t/, /sh/, /n/, /dz/, /p/, /r/, /ch/, /m/ positioning at the second or the third consonant were studied. Consonant discrimination of/d/ and /z/ were improved, however, those of/t/ and /ch/ were decreased. When digital processing of emphasis was applied with the prolongation on the consonants, discrimination scores of /h/, /d/, /z/, /dz/ were improved. These results indicate the digital processing on the consonants make easier understanding of conversation. It was effective to apply the digital processing on the first consonant of words.
