Research Abstract

The change of mandible during the development of osteoporosis is not studied extensively. The present investigation was undertaken to clarify the distinction between mandible and femtur in experimental osteoporosis rats and the possibility of new medication. Experimental osteoporosis in aged female rats (n=40) were prepared after ovariectomy (OVX) and maintained on refined calcium controlled (0.01% Ca) semisynthetic diet. Sham-operated group (n=20), intact control group (n=20), and the organic germanium compound, poly-trans (2-carboxy-ethyl) germaniumsesquioxide (Ge-132), -treated group (n=20) were used in the present study. The osteoporosis was developed in femur at 3 months after the initiation of the experiment. Mandible was extracted and subjected to bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) analyses using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) Bone Scanner (XCT Research SA, Stratec Medizintechnic GmbH, Germany). The bone absorption of trabecular bone underneath the molar was found in rat mandible but not in cortical bone. Ge-132 gave significantly higher BMD of trabecular bone under the first molar. This indicates that the osteoporosis might get the fragility of alveolar bone and the depression of articulation, but treatment with Ge-132 on osteoporosis rats might prevent partially the bone absorption in mandible.
