Research Abstract |
It is expected that some substances found in foods may be useful in caries prevention. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effects of these substances on Streptococcus mutans. To verify their effects on the tooth generally, S.mutans was cultiated and sticked to dental enamel surface. The changes of bacteria morphology and enamel surface were observed chronologically. This basic research was realized to obtain a model to study preventive methods of dental caries. The following substances with their respective concentrations were tested in this study : 0.2% NaF (concentration used in fluoride mouth rinse), 0.5% polyphenol extracted from green tea (used as mouth rinse) and l0% xylitol (final concentration when gum containing 100% xylitol is chewed). They were tested to verify their influence on S.mutans growth. Xylitol did not show clear results in inhibit bacterial growth and when glucose was added into the medium, it is pH dropped. Polyphenol and fluoride showed a decrease i

n the number of bacteria and their pH did not drop. The mixture of xylitol and polyphenol did not present the synergic effect expected. When they were mixed, a chemical reaction between them was observed and this mixture was taken off from this experiment. Japanese green tea, Chinese oolong tea, Denta Thuka from Myanmar and Tsaang Gubat from Philippines are known as beverages that may prevent dental caries. They were percolated, tested and as results : green tea and oolong tea were more effective in inhibit S.mutans growth than Tsaang Gubat and Denta Thuka. Mesurements of fluorine and polyphenol concentrations were done. It was considered that the role of polyphenol was decisive in inhibit S.mutans growth. S.mutans adhered on enamel surface was cultivated and the changes of bacterial cells, surrounds and its attachment on enamel surface were observed after preparation of decalcified specimens. The chronological changes of S.mutans artificial plaque and enamel were studied under light and transmission electron microscope. My intention is continue the same research line, studying models to test others substances useful to prevent dental caries. Less
