Research Abstract

From 1997 to 1999, we investigated the significance and development of managing system for a program to medical students, "The experience of the patients' first 24 hours stay at The Kyushu University Hospital".
Approximately 100 students per year participated in this program as they were separated into about 30 groups (3-5 students each). In 1997, the first year when the program introduced, the students have experienced the situation of either 'Medical Staff (physician or nurse)' or 'Patient'. Since the next year, all of the students spend 24 hours in a ward together with several real patients in one room.
After the stay, we asked the students "Do you agree with continuation of this program for the next year students?" using questionnaire. The numbers of the students who answered "should be continued" or "better to continue" increased 73 %('97), 7 4%('98) and 88 %('99) in the observation period.
On the other hand, any question or problem proposed by the students, medical teachers and the nursing or administrative staffs has been addressed as follows :
・The significance of this program derived from the students' answers was showed to the program staffs.
・The aim of the program and the need to protect the patient's privacy were explained to the students and their signatures were showed to the staffs.
・The program has been set as required in principle for all of the students.
・Students can order limited diet and change the department as the condition allows.
・Coordination of the program and management of students meeting were centralized to Center for Research and Practice in Medical Education.
・Cooperation work, done by administrative and nursing staffs, were simplified and coordinated as they daily do as much as possible.
The results of these investigations were presented in three domestic conferences (Medical Education (Japan) 29(5) : 339-340, 1998, 30(5) : 331-332, 1999, 31(5) : 330-331, 2000) and published in a journal (Kyushu Journal of Higher Education 7:43-52, 2001).
