| Research Abstract |
Strongly Acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW) is classified as one of the functional water. The main composition of SAEW is hypochlorous acid and the effects of SAEW were almost equal to those of sodium hypochloride at pH2.2-2.7. It acts flash disinfection except for bacillus, mycobacterium and fungi. The cytotoxicity is less than conventional disinfectants. The effects are reduced by protein and SAEW rusts some metals.
SAEW is easy to use without dilution, instant disinfectant, safe for human bodies, effective in terms of cost performance and has no color. The characteristics including the reduction of the antimicrobial effects with protein and rusting metals should be understood well for effective sanitation and prevention of hospital infection by adequate use of SAEW.
From our results, the following manual for sanitary hand washing is recommended :
(1) At first, dirty hands should be cleaned and the number of bacteria should be reduced using soap and tap water or by scrubbing with disinfectants.
(2) After the number of bacteria has been reduced, use the SAEW method routinely.
(3) For care requiring a high level of cleanliness or if no tap water facilities are available, use the rubbing method.
Points on SAEW use are the rich supply of fresh SAEW and knowledge the formulae for SAEW (Cl_2 pH etc.) for adequate use.
