Research Abstract |
The present study was undertaken to collect basic data on the demand for a local support system for the continuing professional development (CPD) of medical nurses, to be organized in the districts where they work and live. To gain a detailed picture of the current situation of the nurses, we conducted a questionnaire survey, supplemented by personal interviews, among all the participants of a first-level nursing administrator training program that had been held in 2 prefectures during the past 5 years, under the sponsorship of the nursing association (265 participants in T Prefecture and 277 in K Prefecture). Responses were received from 65.3% of the participants in T Prefecture and 72.9% in K Prefecture. The responses from this survey were analyzed together with data we had obtained in a previous study. We thus gained insight into the current status of CPD, the factors that impede successful CPD, and the problems which remain to be resolved concerning a support system for CPD. The sur

vey revealed that the nurses were highly interested in gaining access to diverse opportunities of learning to update their professional knowledge and skills. In fact, however, their professional work and housework allowed them little time for study activities. The lack of local facilities offering courses as well as the lack of understanding and support from their families and workplaces were further impediments. It was also pointed out that there was no adequate support system for CPD (e.g., information services and consultation). Although the respondents were well aware of the efficacy of continuing education, they often stated that what they had achieved through learning had not been reflected in any pay increase or career promotion. The survey thus revealed the following problems concerning a support system for the CPD of nurses : (1) the inadequacy of the present organization concerning both the training opportunities provided and the utilization of the results, (2) the lack of adequate local support systems for CPD, and (3) the lack of adequate PR for those CPD counseling services that exist. These findings indicate the necessity of introducing a local organization to facilitate continued learning at the workplace, and of reviewing the current system for evaluating the outcome of education. It is advisable to create a well-organized support system for the CPD of nurses near their homes or at the workplace, taking into account the open questions raised by this survey. Less
