Research Abstract |
Alcoholics who were atending alcoholic clinics were characterized in the study of 1999, which reveald that the outpatiens examind were not substntialy from the alcolics in the special ward in social class, age, occupatinal histry.medical histry, therapeutic histry, and rate of those who recieved public assistance. A prognostic investigation was performed 2 years later in 2001, which showed 36.3% of the subjects could continue abstinence from drinking for 2 years, but only 7.7% were at work, and that, among the attributes of the subject, educatinal background and clinics they attended to were significantly related with the continuance of abstinence. detailed semi-structural interview investgation was performed in 29 patients considered to have recovered well from alcoholism. Analysis of the recovery by the self-help groups they belonged to showed the patients thought that AA provided the opportunity of self-affirmation before God (absolute being), and that meetings (Dansh Kai) provided place for self-affirmation as a social being. Typifying the aspects of recovery and lifestyle of the alcoholics without considering the self-help groups they attended showed 5types of (l) wining social success, (2)actively participating in self-help groups, (3) being supported by self-help groups, (4) maintaining both work and family, and (5)selecting a lifestyle separated from social restrictions, with keywords associated with recovery being found for each type. Although it was estimated that the value system of the self-help group each alcoholic belonged to influenced the selection of lifestyle, other factors, such as age and sex, may have also influenced it. Comparing those who revovered from alcoholism with patients being treated showed that, due to symptoms, such as hallucination, or troubles, the former decided to start receiving treatment and abstinence earlier and established abstinence in their 30's or early 40's.
