| Research Abstract |
The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a psycho-education group program for schizophrenic patients on an acute care unit in a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo. The program is provided by multi-disciplinary team of psychiatrist, nurse and pharmacist. The program comprises 4 sessions to encourage patient members discuss their admission to hospital, their own diseases, medication, side effects, and coping with problems relating to taking medication.
In the year 2000, 72 patients participated in the study, 71% were diagnosed with Schizophrenia, and 41 were assigned to the experimental group and 31 to the control group. Two instruments were used in semi-structured interviews to assess effectiveness ; Medication and Treatment Adherence (12 items) and Assessment of Insight (8 items). In addition, Neuroleptic dosage, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale and demographic data were collected. After the treatment, scores on the two outcomes were significantly improved in the experimental group. In the year 2001, 82 patients were recruited, 66% were diagnosed with Schizophrenia, and 59 were allocated to the experimental group and 23 to the control group. The results were equivalent with the data in 2000, both scores on the two outcome measures of the experimental group were significantly improved after the treatment. Thus, psycho-education groups for the inpatients on an acute care unit were probably effective accelerating their awareness of the necessity for medication.
