Research Abstract

Two experiments were conducted to examine physical workload about the care work for a client on a bed and in a wheelchair. In the first experiment, body position of a caregiver was biomechanically monitored with three-dimensional method during a task performed with each of 21 kinds of nursing techniques over a bed, and comparisons were made between the two types of beds with a different height ; Low = 59 cm, High = 69 cm. A female teacher (height of 149 cm, weight of 57 kg) of the nurse's college was participated as a caregiver, who had nurse qualification and was taking charge of practical training courses. Each of eight magnetic position-angle sensors was put on the caregiver's body parts ; the high back, the low back and an upper arm on both side, a forearm on both side and a thigh on both side. Position-angle data of the body parts were taken in to a computer every 0.2 sec. The results indicated that the peak angle of caregiver's trunk inclination (the horizontal = 0 degree) over the low bed was 4.8 degrees on average, which was 9.9 degrees (SD 7.0) deeper than that over the high bed, and that the compression force on a caregiver's interspinal disk (L5/S1) leveled off through each task over the low bed was significantly higher (P< .05) on average than that over the high bed. In the second experiment, ten nursing students (mean height=156.6±SD 4.9 cm) were served as test subjects to evaluate the relation between physique/muscle strength and subjective workload of transferring a client from wheelchair to bed with RPE (Rating Perceived Exertion). The significant correlation coefficients (P< .05) were detected between RPE of the neck & shoulder and the height (r=0.732) and between those of the arms and the height (r=0.634).
