Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to research the changing retail structure imt Japan from 1970 to 2000. First, the author deals with the relationships between the changing spatial patterns of large-scale stores with the changing retail structures. Second, the author deals with the changes in spatial patterns of retail structure in Kinki Region. The auhor divided Japan into three areas : three metropolitan areas, other metropolitan areas, other areas. In three metropolitan areas, the ratios of large-scale stores and chain sotres are the highest in Japan. In other areas, the ratios of small retail shops and outles bv 1,000 persons are the highest in Janan. And in other areas, the sales by 1,000 persons have increased rapidly from 1970 to 2000 because the number of poplation has decreased during this period. In Kinki Region, the number of retail outlets in inner citeies and rulal areas began to decrease from 1979. The reason of this decrease in number of retail outlets can is explained by the decrease in poplation in these areas. After 1982, in suburban areas, the number of retail outlets has decreased rapidly. After 1982, the number of retail outlets has decreased slowly in rulal areas. So the retail outlets by 100 persons is the highest in 1997.
