Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to investigate the life styles of the elderly who live in a sparsely populated rural area of Hokkaido. We interviewed 157 elderly residents, living in Otoineppu, the smallest village in Hokkaido, from August through September, 2000. In addition, a survey of 64 older residents of Nayoro, the city nearest Otoineppu, was conducted from July through August, 1999. The results are as follows ; 1) A lack of infrastructure (hospitals, public transportation, shops for food and amenities, house care systems etc.・・・) makes life difficult for elderly residents living in a rural area. 2) Elderly residents do their best to be good neighbors to each other and to maintain independent lives. 3) Rice is the staple food of most elderly. A well balanced, low calorie diet, using fresh garden vegetables is the typical dietary style. 4) Proximity to hospitals and other medical facilities is one of the major problems for the elderly. Most elderly people have chronic diseases, and with these serious conditions, have to travel a long distance to the hospital. This is an obstacle for the settling of the elderly in a rural area.
