| Research Abstract |
'SPS 2000' is an international pilot plant project to demonstrate the transmission of solar power from space and its utilisation on Earth. A satellite in equatorial orbit at an altitude of 1100 km will transmit a 10Mw microwave beam generated from solar panels intermittently to several receiving antennas ('rectennas'). These will be sited near the equator in selected countries - the 'rectenna countries' - and will convert the power to electricity for supply to local users. The rectenna sites must be within 3 degrees latitude of the equator, and each will receive power for some 200 seconds on each overhead pass of the satellite, every 100 minutes during the daytime.
Due to the continuously changing direction and distance of the satellite from the rectenna, the changing direction of the Sun and other factors, the energy received by each rectenna will be different and will vary on each pass. These conditions have been simulated in a computer model which has been used for designing individual rectennas.
The next major milestone is to simulation of the whole 'SPS 2000' system operation, including the satellite and all the rectermas ; this will be useful for the designers of the satellite and the overall system. Preparation has been made for this simulation by assembling information about every rectenna site in field research, and making a detailed plan of the work needed to realize such a simulation, and of the various outputs including computer graphics that will be useful.
