Research Abstract |
This application study had two major objects. The first one was to grasp the sedimental situations of coplanar PCB in lake sediment as the historical trends by taking some sediment s in practice and determining sedimental years of these samples. The second was to infer what and how the sources were involved. For this purposes we surveyed and collected references of the sources' information concerning coplanar PCB.And as the method of statistics, we applied to the principle component analysis for the results of sediment samples analysis. At the beginning, we analyzed the historical trends of PCDDs/DFs and PCBs in the sediment at Background area, Lake Biwa and Osaka Bay. In terms of PCDDs/DFs, they indicated that the concentration in the sediment had increased since about 1960 at Lake Biwa and Osaka Bay. Considering the patterns of homologues and congeners, it seemed to be combined pollution by combustion sources and chemicals such like PCP, CNP at Lake Biwa and Osaka Bay. Through the PCBs

concentration trends, both PCBs and Co-PCBs were shown to be almost the same as a whole sediment core samples at Background area. On the other hand, the concentration was observed to increase at its surface. At the surrounding industrial areas such like south lake of Lake Biwa, the Yodo River Offing, and west of Kobe Port Island, this peak period of the concentration in the sediment just coincided with producing and using the PCB products. By the PCBs homologue profile, T_4CBs were detected clearly on the whole, but there were quite differences in each stations. The ratios of T_3CBs were high at Background area, whereas P_5CBs and H_6CBs at Lake Biwa and H_7CBs and O_8CBs at Osaka Bay were high rate. By the Co-PCBs congener profile as well, low chlorinated congeners were mainly detected at Background area, while much higher chlorinated congeners in large quantities at Lake Biwa were detected at quite high rate, so were _<170 and >180 at Osaka Bay. Background area seemed to be affected by the sources at distant areas by way of the air transport. North lake of Lake Biwa was supposed to be influenced by the sources surrounding area by way of water and the air. Less
